1. Is UMAMO plant-based?

Yes!
UMAMO is 100% plant-based, made entirely from sustainably cultivated microalgae. UMAMO’s products do not utilize meat, fish or dairy. It’s a perfect umami booster for vegans and flexitarian diets.

2. Is UMAMO vegan and B Corp certified?

We are in the process of obtaining vegan certification and B Corp certification to further reinforce our commitment to ethical and sustainable food production. We’ll make an official announcement once certifications are finalized.

3. Does UMAMO contain heavy metals?

Mercury, which is a concern in some marine products, has not been detected in UMAMO, making it a safe source of marine nutrients like DHA.

4. How is UMAMO made?

We use a proprietary fermentation process that grows microalgae using Awamori sake lees, a natural byproduct of Okinawan sake-making. No animal-derived ingredients are used at any stage of production.

5. What does UMAMO taste like?

UMAMO delivers a deep, rich umami flavor with a flavor similar to karasumi (dried mullet roe). It enhances flavor complexity in everything from soups and broths to proteins and sauces.

6. How can I use UMAMO in cooking?

UMAMO is incredibly versatile! Use it to boost umami in broths, sauces, dressings, plant-based meats, and even baked goods. A small amount goes a long way in enhancing flavor.

UMAMO is crafted in Okinawa, Japan, using a carefully controlled fermentation process. Our production facility follows strict quality standards to ensure purity and consistency.

8. Is UMAMO gluten-free and allergen-free?

Yes, UMAMO is naturally gluten-free, soy-free, and free from major allergens. It’s a great option for people with dietary restrictions looking to enhance their meals with umami flavor.
Our soy sauce products are not gluten-free at this point in time.

9. How is UMAMO sustainable?

We upcycle Awamori sake lees that would otherwise go to waste, reducing food waste while creating a powerful, sustainable umami source. Plus, our land-based cultivation method helps protect ocean ecosystems by offering an alternative to fish-derived umami sources.
